As in, you aren't basing your opinion on something the Bible or any other type of religious text says.
If so, why are you against gay marriage? Are you a person against gay marriage for non-religious reasons?
Because it is a misnomer.
If I were standing in a park with a friend and I pointed to a man who was walking on his hands, and I said ';He is walking';
My friend would immediately correct me and say, ';No, he is walking on his hands, there is a difference';. And He would say that because we all understand that walking is done on ones feet.
No matter what, 100 or 1000 years from now. If I were standing in a park with a friend and I pointed to a man and I said ';That man is married!';.
If this is all that my friend knows about this man, my friend will believe this man is married to a woman.
Because that is what what the word marriage means. Like ';walking on your hands'; will will always have to use some sort of qualifying expressions, such as 'gay marriage' or 'same sex marriage'; or 'he is married to another man', if we are going to be able to communicate effectively and accurately.
We will never be able to refer to it simply as marriage, which is of course what the proponents of 'gay marriage' are shooting for.
They of course can never meet the mark because like 'walking' for 'walking on your hands', it is a misnomer.
Hope that helps. Are you a person against gay marriage for non-religious reasons?
Yes, because it isn't natural in nature.
You don't see male lions staying with other male lions for ever in a sort of gay-lion marriage.
Homosexuality is a mental defect, because it doesn't help the individual or the species, like white tigers, it doesn't help them at all, in fact they usually die very early in life.
if most humans were gay, our species would die
And animals may display gay behavior, but it is oonly a fleeting action.
and marriage was defined before the bible, even the jewish bible.
if there were no gay people, our society would be more peaceful because people wouldn't fight over it, the same way if there was only one race, but race is an evolutionary advantage, Homosexuality is not.
Gay people aren't any happier than straight people, so they might as well be straight, at least that would help them.
Twelve reasons gay marriage is wrong:
1) Being gay is not natural. Real Americans always reject unnatural things like eyeglasses, polyester, and air conditioning. Also apparently those homosexual animals have picked up some unnatural behavior.
2) Gay marriage will encourage people to be gay, in the same way that hanging around tall people will make you tall.
3) Gay marriage will change the foundation of society; we could never adapt to new social norms. Just like we haven't adapted to cars, the service-sector economy, or longer life spans.
4) Straight marriage has been around a long time and hasn't changed at all; women are still property, blacks still can't marry whites, and divorce is still illegal.
5) Straight marriage will be less meaningful if gay marriage were allowed; the sanctity of Britney Spears' 55-hour just-for-fun marriage would be destroyed.
6) Straight marriages are valid because they produce children. Gay couples, infertile couples, and old people shouldn't be allowed to marry because our orphanages aren't full yet, and the world needs more children.
7) Obviously gay parents will raise gay children, since straight parents only raise straight children.
8) Gay marriage is not supported by religion. In a theocracy like ours, the values of one religion are imposed on the entire country. That's why we have only one religion in America.
9) Children can never succeed without a male and a female role model at home. That's why we as a society expressly forbid single parents to raise children.
10) Legalizing gay marriage will open the door to all kinds of crazy behavior. People may even wish to marry their pets because a dog has legal standing and can sign a marriage contract.
11) Gay marriage should be decided by the people, not the courts, because the majority-elected legislatures, not courts, have historically protected the rights of minorities.
12) Civil Unions, providing most of the same benefits as marriage with a different name are better, because a ';separate but equal'; institution is always constitutional. Separate schools for African-Americans worked just as well as separate marriages for gays and lesbians will.
EDIT@ Love always. Yeah. How about that. They don't make sense....
Uhm, isn't non-religious marriage an oxymoron? That's like non-religious baptism or non-religious salvation...
If it's non-religious, then what's the point of getting 'married'? Marriage was an institution founded by religion. I think queer folks should come up with something else that allows them to get 'hitched' in a manner that shows devotion to each other and allows them to sue the crap outta each other like straight peeps when they divorce.
As for gays in general, I feel pity for them. Gays are either made or born. Those are the only 2 ways. Those that have 'become' gay over time are psychologically gay, usually due to some kind of trauma. Those born gay I feel sorry for like I feel for those with other congenital birth defects. Humans do not reproduce asexually or homosexually. Yet the purpose of our drive for relationships, sex, etc is for procreation. If a gay is born gay, then they have a mutant birth defect, and should be treated with gene therapy as soon as it becomes available...But only if they want it. We don't force adults to get treatment if they want to remain afflicted. But we shouldn't encourage them to revel in their sickness either.
Parents don't encourage their epileptic kids to play flashy video games, so why should they encourage them to butt-hump a member of their own gender. It makes no sense.
Well to start i think it should be allowed because it is a personal thing not a society or government issue.
However a nice non-religious reason to forbid gays to marry would be that we straights have destroyed the sancitity of marriage and basically dragged the entire idea thru so much mud and sh*t that gays should not have to have this crappy, demeaned, dented, undervalued stone placed around their necks.
They should get a whole new word that straights cannot use so they don't f it all up like we have the family, marriage, and common decency.
mark h %26gt; sorry not correct. walking on hands IS walking we just apply the ';on hands'; as a clarification as walking is defined as movement on only 2 limbs as opposed to crawling which is movement on all 4 limbs. Cherry soda may be a descriptor but that does not mean it is not soda...it is an adjective that is not required but done to better explain/describe for the other person. So your point is invalid i think
A little. I don't mind gay people, some of them I like some of them I don't. And no they are not just people because they are very different in the way they act.
I would like to get married and not be in a group with gay people. Marriage seems kind of a beautiful union and is closely related to sex and love. Whilst I am not bothered by gay people having relationships, the physical acts such as kissing or sex repulse me. I believe this is just my cultural upbringing and has no logical base.
When I get married, I do not want my beautiful union associted in any way whatsoever with a guy shafting another guy in the ****. Because that seems gross to me. But that's just me.
As marriage has tarditioanlly not been associated with gay people, allowing gay marriage would be a change that would soil the image of marriage as far as I am concerned.
The bible says ';for a man to lie with a man'; is wrong, but it also says that if a child does not obey their mother and father, he should be punished greatly (or something or other). It also says if a wife is late (or something like that) she should be stoned to death. IMO, it's just another little saying like that. You can't help being gay. You're born like that- it's how your brain works. Even animals have shown homosexual behaviors! I think that people who are so against it are reading into the bible way too seriously. Two gay people getting married is none of their business- if they don't like it, then they don't have to argue about it or talk or think about it!
I'm a gay atheist male.
I have major issues with gay marriage.
Marriage has historically been a sociological, not governmental, function. It has not been 'legal' as it is today. The modern version in the USA mingles religious-sociological aspects with the legal aspects, creating a major problem.
As far as I am concerned, gay rights advocates shot themselves and every other gay person in this country in the foot. By going after 'marriage', they overlooked the severe reaction that would be raised by the religious right. I feel that gay rights advocates were so focused on a WORD that they forgot what was really important -- the RIGHTS.
We should have had civil unions (and thus the RIGHTS) in at least half the states before anyone EVER asked for the WORD.
The word is simply not important.
I believe gay rights advocates should have been pushing for something similiar to what is most common in Europe -- the government only recognizes the contract, and the contract must be officiated in a secular manner by a governmental representative. The marriage aspect, the religious and sociological ritual, is conducted elsewhere in accordance with the married couple's religious and/or sociological beliefs.
So technically -- even though I'm a gay atheist male citizen of the USA -- I don't agree with gay marrage. I don't agree with straight marriage either. I hold that the government should worry about the RIGHTS for ALL couples, gay or straight, via civil unions, and that the couple's religious or social circles should handle the RITUALS for their respective couples.
Anyone who says homosexuality is ';not natural'; may I remind you...
Fact: Black Swans, Gulls, Mallards, and Penguins have all been observed to show homosexual behavior or even couple up and build a nest together.
Fact: Dolphins enjoy group sex, perform non-reproductive sexual acts, and have found to be naturally bisexual, having an opposite sex and same sex partner for life.
Fact: Other mammals, such as apes, elephants, giraffes, lions, and sheep have been observed to have homosexual behavior.
Etc etc etc. Keep looking up this topic, and you'll find that homosexuality is very natural. One is born as a sexual being, and sexuality is a spectrum, not black and white. We biologically enjoy sex and sex can feel good from either an opposite sex or same sex partner. So try a different secular argument against homosexuality... I doubt you'll find one though.
By the way, Child of Vision, the reason homosexuality is an issue is not because ';they are happy that way'; or ';they are rebels';-- they are born that way and they are not treated with the same human rights as anyone else. They don't want to ';take down heterosexuality'; or ';God,'; they simply want to have the same rights as every other human being and be treated with respect. I don't think that's too much to ask.
Honestly isn't the criteria for not liking gay people, that you have to harbor the the Biblical definition of marriage (between man and woman). To a person that doesn't have religious reasons. Marriage is two people that like each other enough to perform a ceremony that gets the government involved in their personal affairs.
Okay, I am against gay marriage, I just don't know why but it isn't right to me and it's kind of nasty but I don't have a problem with gay GUYS,but gay women i'm not really a big fan of them. It's not like our opinion matters though cause it's their life, their choice, and they are going to do it anyway whether we are for it or against it.
Moi. I think gay people should be allowed to have what we consider--a marriage. But I like words to hold their own meanings. To consider marriage--an institution which carries ideas of bearing children, and raising a family--one should like to keep its original meaning, and a new word should describe the more..romantic and emotional relationship between two lovers of the same sex.
What is so wrong with gay marriage. My Leading lady and I have remained unmarried (her idea) because its just a social construct, its just a set of pointless words. At the end of the day, we don't need no stinking bit of paper to tell us we love each other. But if people want to get married so be it. The only difference between gay and straight marriage is the configuration of genitals and can we please grow up?
No. I am for gay marriage for non-religious reasons. Marriage has been re-defined over and over again for thousands of years. (harems, women as property, incestuous royal marriages, bi-racial, divorce, etc.) It won't hurt us to do it again.
Wither it be by religious or none-religious reason it would still be wrong to hate some for who there are. It simply goes against everything I stand for because bigotry is simply hatred because of what an other person is or believes.
tottaly agaist it.
The reason is that, look at how there is two opposite sexes. male and a female. I think God created two sexes so that the two can mate, and build a family.
My religious views are separate from my views on gay marriage and I don't mind if homosexuals get married - it has no impact on me.
well, I personally can't stand the sight of two guys kissings, it's just something about it that makes me cringe.
So I guess that's a non religious reason.
I am not against it period
ESPECIALLY for religious reasons - based on kissing up to invisible sky dad
no i am not against gay marriage. they r humans just like striaght people. they have wants they have needs they have dreams and they make mistakes just like straight people do.
It's unnatural. The next thing we know, there will be another pressure group insisting that they be allowed to marry their pets.
Nope.
I say let them be happy.
We need to spread the love around in this world, stop pinning people against each other. I am sure any god would toast to that.
Are you a person in favor of gay marriage for religious reasons ?
I'm fine with it, I see no reason in why two men or women can't be together if they love each other. Some say it's unnatural, but thats because they were raised to believing that !
over population dictates we as the people of the world should be for gay marriage .
no what i think is who gives a crap if people are homo sexual i mean its their there lives not ours why do people care
no, gays and lesbians should b left ALONE!! who cares anyway!! let them get married if they really love each other! LET THE WORLD B HAPPY!! :))
if i say im not against gay marriage will they stop having marches and holding up traffic?
What reason could that possibly be that doesnt involve bigoty of some sort
Its unnatural.
Next donkeys will be mating with chickens.
But hey, the world is warped in so many ways....who really cares?
I take issues with them galavanting around as if they have special privileges over the rest of society.
You dont see married couples dressing in leather and putting straps on their kids and parading around promoting family and children do you?
They are just REBELS. If they were indeed happy with their chosen sexuality they would not be making an issue about it.
They would just go to work, go home, have sex, and carry on like the rest of society.
But it's more, it's about taking DOWN society, at least heterosexuality or God or whatever, so in that respect I don't feel these people have any good intentions for anyone else other than themselves.
And the one good thing is that yes, at least they can't propogate and it's time the world downsized some anyhow.
Sorry. Get used to it. It will be like this till the end of TIME.
Live with it or accept what you'll have to live with it.
As I said what do I give a rat's behind?? NO pun intended...
Highschool Confidential anyone?

It makes me cream my jeans when she comes my way....and here I thought it was just incontinence.
One compelling non-religious issue is that male homosexual conduct is a public health catastrophe.
There are also plenty of good religous reasons — http://www.jimfeeney.org/againstgaymarri…
