California Death Records

9,366,786 records from 1940 thru 1997

Many, not all of the records for men have mother's maiden name.

Many, not all, of the records for women have both MMN and father's surname.

Ancestry has three databases from California for subscribers,

California Birth Index, 1905-1995

California Marriage Index, 1960-1985

They are not online and are not free. You did not say if it is for someone living now or lived a long time ago. That MAY make a difference, in some states. Some states will put such records on their website for people who have been deceased a long time. But such records are private for living people and only those individuals or their parents or their children can obtain them....and there IS a fee because it is a means for the state to generate revenue, in addition to the fact that the storage and maintenance of such records is not free. The state pays for the staff, equipment, and facilities to do that. In any event, you will need to contact the Dept. of Vital Statistics for the state the person was born in for birth records, died in for death records, and married in for marriage records. With any luck, the person did all 3 in the same state.
I don't think you can get a record of your birth certificate for free. There is always a fee. here is one site, please check for your birth certificate. http://www.replacementbirthcertificate.o鈥?/a>
